Abstract

The present study tries to analyse tourism trends in Kumaun Himalaya from 2000 to 2023 and assess its implications on its socio-economic and natural environment. Tourism is major economic activity in Kumaun, it is an important source of livelihood in the region, it also promotes infrastructural development and regional growth of the Kumaun Himalaya. But due to its ecological sensitive location, unplanned tourism development give rise to the problem like ecological stress, forest diversion, pollution and traffic and also uneven tourism results in disproportionate advantage for local people. A descriptive-analytical approach has been used in the present study to examine the pattern of tourist arrivals and its implications on the study region. The finding shows positive long-term tourism growth, heavily driven by domestic tourism and a period of shock in 2013 and 2020 followed by recovery. The paper suggets involvement of all the stakeholders to create balance between economic growth and environmental conservation.
