The decentralization of governance through the Panchayati Raj system has opened new avenues for women’s political participation in India. This article examines the extent and nature of women’s participation in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in Jorhat district of Assam. It argues that although constitutional provisions have ensured increased representation, effective participation remains constrained by socio-economic and cultural barriers. Based on quantitative and secondary data, the study highlights both the achievements and limitations of women’s engagement in grassroots democracy.
